How to Measure for a New Garage Door

Getting the right size garage door is crucial for proper fit and operation. Taking precise measurements ensures your new door will install smoothly and operate flawlessly for years to come. Follow these simple steps to measure for your new garage door:

Step 1: Measure Door Width With the garage door closed, measure the opening at the widest point from one door jamb to the other. Record this measurement in inches on your worksheet under "Door Width."

Step 2: Measure Door Height Measure from the floor up to the top of the door opening lintel. This gives you the height measurement to record on your worksheet under "Door Height."

Step 3: Measure Side Room Open the door and measure the distance from the face of the door to the side wall on the left side. Repeat for the right side. These "side room" dimensions are needed for the door operating equipment.

Step 4: Measure Header Space While the door is open, check if you have sufficient headroom for the new door operating equipment. Measure from the top of the door opening to the ceiling on the inside. This should be at least 12" of headroom space.

Step 5: Measure Ceiling Space Open the door and measure the distance from the door header to the back wall of the garage. This measurement determines if you have adequate space for the horizontal door tracks.

By taking these five measurements, you'll have everything needed to order a new garage door that fits perfectly. Double check your figures before submitting your order form.
