Do I Need a Professional Installer?

Do I Need a Professional Installer?
  by Doorix Team

The short answer is yes. Here's why it matters more than you think.

Garage doors are not a DIY project.

We know that's not what some people want to hear. There are plenty of YouTube tutorials, and aluminum doors look simpler than wood or steel. But garage doors are one of the most mechanically complex — and physically dangerous — systems in your home. The consequences of getting it wrong go far beyond a door that doesn't open smoothly.

This post explains what's actually involved in a proper installation, what can go wrong, and how to find the right person for the job.

What a garage door installation actually involves

A complete garage door installation isn't just hanging panels on a wall. It includes:

  • Setting and tensioning torsion or extension springs (under extreme load — these can cause serious injury if mishandled)
  • Aligning and securing vertical and horizontal tracks to within tight tolerances
  • Installing drums, cables, and bearing plates correctly
  • Mounting and connecting the opener with proper force and travel settings
  • Calibrating safety sensors and auto-reverse functions
  • Confirming the door is balanced — a door that won't stay at mid-position is a hazard

Every one of these steps requires experience. An incorrectly tensioned spring doesn't just make the door hard to open — it can snap under load, damaging your car, your door, or injuring someone nearby.

Why a general contractor or handyman isn't the right choice

General contractors are skilled, but garage door systems are a specialty. A GC who doesn't work with these systems regularly will take longer, charge more, and is more likely to make an error that voids your warranty — or creates a safety hazard.

The same applies to handymen. Hanging a door panel is not the same as properly tensioning a torsion spring system or setting opener travel limits.

Doorix's warranty is voided by installation performed by an unlicensed or unqualified installer. That's not a technicality we hide in the fine print — it's because the warranty covers manufacturing defects, not damage caused by improper installation. We can't stand behind a door that wasn't installed correctly.

What to look for in a garage door installer

Hire a licensed garage door specialist — not a general contractor, not a handyman. Here's what to verify before you book:

  • License and insurance — ask for their contractor license number and confirm it's active in your state. Require proof of liability insurance.
  • Specialty — they should work exclusively or primarily with garage doors. This isn't a side job for them.
  • Experience with aluminum and full-view doors — aluminum full-view doors have different weight and balance characteristics than traditional steel panel doors. Ask if they've installed similar systems before.
  • Written quote and scope — get a written breakdown of what's included: labor, hardware, opener wiring if applicable, and haul-away of old door if needed.
  • Warranty on labor — a professional should stand behind their work. Ask what their warranty covers and for how long.

You can find licensed garage door installers through Google, Yelp, HomeAdvisor, or your local contractor licensing board. Search for "garage door installation" + your city — not "handyman" or "general contractor."

A note on cost

Hiring a specialist is almost always more affordable than hiring a GC for the same job. Garage door installers work efficiently because it's what they do every day. A GC unfamiliar with the system will take longer and charge more per hour. You'll spend more and get a worse result.

Think of it the same way you'd think about plumbing or electrical work. You wouldn't hire a general contractor to rewire your panel — you'd hire an electrician. Hire the specialist.

What Doorix covers — and what we don't

Doorix warranties cover manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship:

  • Aluminum frame and panels: 5 years
  • Hardware and springs: 1 year
  • Powder-coat and anodized finishes: 3 years

We do not cover damage caused by improper installation, post-delivery modifications, or work performed by unlicensed contractors. If something goes wrong due to how the door was installed, that's between you and your installer — which is why getting a professional with their own labor warranty matters.

The bottom line

You're investing in a premium door. Protect that investment with a professional installation. A licensed garage door specialist will get the job done faster, safer, and at a price that's competitive with less-qualified alternatives.
